YOUNG MEN/AM PAIN: This is one of the few rheumatic diseases that affect more men then women. Most patients are men between 20 to 40 years old with worse morning stiffness and pain which improves as you become more active. It typically affects the spine first but can cause joint pain in other areas such as the knees and hips. It is a disease that most patients have a positive blood test called an hla-b27.

Stiffness: I would expect the patient to have spine pain and limited spine bending.  Chest expansion, chest size difference between maximum exhale and maximum inhale size is less than 2 inches.  Ankylosing Sponlylitis is rare in females

Back Pain & Stiffnes: The symptoms include slowly worsening back that has been present for more than 3 months. The symptoms as worse in the morning and with inactivity. Exercise may decrease some of the symptoms.

A little different: We don`t know the exact reason but ankylosing spondylitis is less common in women and in general less severe.  But treatment is the same. Incidentally lupus is less frequent in men and generally less severe. BUT both sexes can still have severe disease.

See below: Over 90% who tested positive for seronegative spondyloarthropathy never have any symptoms.  However you have previously posted that you have had 2 cases of iritis---so technically you have had symptoms.  Hla-b27 can be seen in all seronegative spondyloarthritis which is a family of arthrititic conditions include psoriatic, chrohn's, ulcerattive colitis, reactive/reiter's as well as ankylosing spon.

See a Rheumatologist: Ankluylosing  spondylitis  is  rheumatoid  factor  negative  and is inflammatory back pain.

i have ankylosing spondylitis and have experienced a tender vertebra for the last 6 months. could this be progressive as? other as symptoms are mild.

Possibly: With A/S your vertebral joints cannot heal as quickly when strained, hence, become inflamed and tender more easily. Speak with your rheumatologist about reducing the inflammation with alternative (turmeric) or prescription agents NSAIDS. Pain docs can also inject  specific joints to ease your burden. TNS units, topical anti inflammatory (flector patch) agents can help too.

can ankylosing spondylitis progress rapidly? went from a linear progression of symptoms to exponential. my diaphragm & sternum hurt slightly & difficult to take a deep breath. its not def as but def spondyloarthritis- further testing mri etc?

AS: When we think of AS we think of it as a males' disease, but it occurs in women and women tend to have more neck and peripheral joint involvement. However, I'm uncertain of rib cage involvement. A rheumatologist would be best to consult for evaluation, testing,treatment and follow-up care.

Abdominal pain: Before starting a strict exercise regime, i would advise you to first get evaluated for abdominal pain at lunch time. Exercise may worsen this pain. Therefore, get evaluated by your physician to know what&#x27;s causing this pain and to get treatment.
