Stiffness: I would expect the patient to have spine pain and limited spine bending. Chest expansion, chest size difference between maximum exhale and maximum inhale size is less than 2 inches. Ankylosing Sponlylitis is rare in females

Several: Non-steroidal antiinflammatories like Motrin are effective and the best to start with. Prolonged use may cause gastric pain and ulcers. The most effective drugs are tnf inhibitors like infliximab, but they are extremely expensive and pose more severe side effects. Other options exist, like sulfasalazine, and your doctor can optimize treatment as severity and one's response change over time.

Stiffness & Swelling: Ankylosing spondylitis literally means 'the joining together and inflammation of joints in the spine.' this inflammation is caused by the body's immune system specifically targeting ligaments in the spine and pelvis that are then replaced by new bone, leading to stiffness and pain. For pain relief?: Ankylosing spondylitis is associated with systemic inflammation, and aside from the sijs and spine, can cause iritis, valvular heart disease. Pain control is very important, these drugs do not inherently reduce inflammation, which also causes heart disease. Of the over the counter meds for pain, i believe the longer acting Naproxen is best, two tabs twice daily.

Unknown, genes: The exact cause is uncertain, but it does seem to have a genetic connection. It is more common in males. It usually starts in early adulthood (occasionally earlier or later), ofter with morning stiffness and back pain. Severe pain, stiffness in a young person in the absence of trauma may be a good reason to see your doctor. Consider a seeing a rheumatologist.
