a friend of mine fell several years ago and damaged the nerves in his spine that tell his ankles to straighten. he now has to walk on the outsides of his ankles and is in extreme pain. orthopedic surgeons have said there's no way to fix this. is that true

Second opinion: If he is in severe pain from walking on the outside of his ankles, almost certainly something can be done.  Consider a second opinion if you are not getting the help you need.

Yes: But you will have to do a general orthopedic residency and then a fellowship in foot and ankle.
Or you could attend podiatry school and  then do a residency in only foot and ankle.

Depends: entirely on severity of fracture and associated injuries.  If it is a non displaced or minimally displaced fracture and you have no other injury, it should eventually heal on its own.

Symptoms?: You do not mention why you would return before your scheduled visit. If you are having pain or new symptoms, call your Ortho doc to,discuss ASAP. If you are just in a rush to remove the cast/boot, it may be too soon. Generally your doc would have the return visit timed when healing had occurred, and changes can be made.

i have a lump on my ankle that i started noticing 3 months ago.  does not hurt and feels hard.  seems to align with the tendon. thoughts?  i have an appointment scheduled in five days with a orthopedic surgeon.

Cyst/partial tear: There are many causes of lumps on tendons. Common ones include a tendon sheath cyst or partial tear with inflammation surrounding the area of healing. It is good to get it checked out by an orthopedist, to make sure of the diagnosis.

Training: An orthopaedic surgeon with a foot and ankle fellowship has undergone many more years of training than a podiatrist.  In addition, a podiatrist is generally just approved for limited ankle and foot surgeries in most states, while an orthopaedic surgeon can understand and correlate other limb issues with your ankles/alignment issue.

Span the splinters..: Usually we place a plate with screws or a rod across the area of splintering and secure the bone above and below. If necessary we can then repair the smaller pieces with individual screws where possible.

See below: You need to attend medical school and then do an orthopedic residency and then a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery.
You will be exposed to back surgery  but may not have to do any depending on the program.
