Units?:   Studies have shown that aneurysms of mean size 1.5 cm (0.3 to 4.0 cm) did not rupture over the course of eight years.  Symptomatic aneurysms, enlarging aneurysms or those exceeding 2 cm should be treated.

Depends: Typically an ascending aortic aneurysm is repaired after it becomes between 5.0 to 5.5 cm in size, depending on other factors such as age, how quickly it is expanding, and the presence of other conditions such as marfan's disease.

valve leakage( aortic regurgitation)
increasing size or pain
hypertension( high blood pressure)
other cardiac or vascular, or lung disease
other significant risk factors for a major operation
in general, ct follow up about every 6 months until > 5.5.

husband has a 4.9 aortic aneurysm and has been hiking @ high elevations. will this increase the size of the aneurysm and should  he not hike?

Depends: Yes if willing to take risk of rupture, then  no one wants to take risk of rupture .   4 to 5 cm   aa will have .0.5 % to 5 % chance of rupture     5 to 6 cm has  3% to  6%   ask your vascular surgeon  he will advise what is best.

should my father have surgery for his aneurysm? my dad is 71 years old and a long time smoker.  he recently had an aneurysm, but the doctors said surgery is not recommended.  the size of the aneurysm is 4.6 centimeters.  is surgery really too risky?

Whether : Whether or not to surgically repair an asymptomatic aortic aneurysm depends on weighing the risk of surgery versus the risk of aneurysm tear or rupture. When risk of rupture exceeds risk of surgery, it makes sense to operate. But, if surgical risk is higher than risk of rupture then operating is not likely to help the patient. For most patients, the threshold to operate is 5.5 centimeters and so this is the recommendation from professional societies like the american college of cardiology and the american heart association. Surgery is also recommended if the aneurysm is associated with pain. It is critical that your father quit smoking and maintain good blood pressure and cholesterol so as to minimize his risk for a dangerous complication.

given the fact that i have 3 brain aneurysms and an asd should i be concerned over a slight size diff. in my pupils?

Not necessarily: Anisocoria, or a difference between the size of the pupils, can be present to a small degree, up to one millimeter, in normal people.  If the pupillary difference you are noticing is different from before, it would be reasonable to mention this to your doc.  In any case, you probably need following for the aneurysms on a regular basis to be sure no change in size.  Pupils not related to asd.

Yes, this test: should be able to tell you the size and the clinical significance of these findings.

Thoracic aneurysm.: Not all thoracic aneurysms originate from the aortic root.  If suspicion still exists, a transesophageal echocardiogram or CT of the chest may be more informative.

growing size of abdominal aortic aneurysm; how much is safe?

Accepted Answer

Aneurysm size: Beyond 4cm, the aneurysm is observed very closely. It needs be operated before it burst.
