High haptoglobin is: Nonspecific. Probably just a marker of illness in general. In severe anemia oxygen delivery to tissue is compromised and lactate could rise.

can i possibly have hemolytic anemia with normal reticulocytes and ldh, but no haptoglobin, high mchc plus low alpha 2 globulin? currently i have itp and very low lymphocyte count. symptoms include shortness of breath, svt episodes, fatigue?

: A man with hemolytic anemia could certainly have symptoms of fatigue and even shortness of breath.  You will want to be sure your hematologist knows all of your symptoms and is sure your anemia is controlled.

First would be a general sense of one's health.  Are there any chronic illnesses or infections?

Next would be if there could be a bleeding ulcer or other situation in the GI tract. 

Any good medical provider will investigate this situation fully to make sure the cause is identified and treated.

See an MD: There are many reasons for anemia.  They can only be differentiated by doing blood tests. Anemia can be due to low iron or genetic problems but also due to many other types of medical problems.  If you have anemia you should see your primary care doctor or a hematologist.

Need more info: Iron deficiency is not defined solely by a low iron, other levels are improtant. The most important is are you anemic. The MCV (mean corpuscular volume) is helpful as well. The TIBC (total iron binding capacity), ferritin are important as well. The gold standard for iron deficiency would be a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy negative for iron staining. For B12 def, you need an mma. Ask your md.

Low iron: For some reason your iron stores are low - ferritin is the "iron warehouse" of the body. Either u are losing iron (heavy periods?) or not getting enough in your diet. Some vegetarians for example don't eat enough foods with iron in them. Certainly u need this problem to be solved because iron is essential for blood cell production and anemia is no fun. Hopefully your primary doc can figure it out.

Yes possible anemia: In blood, haptoglobin (HG) binds free hemoglobin (Hb) (released from red blood cells) with high affinity and thus inhibits its oxidative activity. Therefore HG causes blood cells to lose their ability to carry and transmit oxygen to cells and tissues.  Almost like drowning at the celluar level.  HG is found in severe stress, burns, allergy and crush injuries.  Clinically low HG is c/w anemia.
