Yes possible anemia: In blood, haptoglobin (HG) binds free hemoglobin (Hb) (released from red blood cells) with high affinity and thus inhibits its oxidative activity. Therefore HG causes blood cells to lose their ability to carry and transmit oxygen to cells and tissues. Almost like drowning at the celluar level. HG is found in severe stress, burns, allergy and crush injuries. Clinically low HG is c/w anemia.

IncompleteQuestion: Low Haptoglobin if it is significantly decreased along with increased reticulocyte count and a decrease RBC count, hemoglobin and hematocrit ,then it is likely that the person has some kind of hemolytic anemia. It means the Red Blood Cells are destroyed in the cisculationn. Also called Intravascular Hemolysis

Depends: If it is always low, it may be due to genetic variation. Haptoglobin deficiency is commoner is some groups, e.g. Japanese. If it became low suddenly, it indicates intravascular destruction of red cells.

How do you FEEL?: Some folks do not even have the stuff and seem none the worse. If this is an isolated abnormal value, and you feel well, forget it.
