i am having a colonoscopy friday and i am worried about anesthesia. ?

Short acting: anesthesia is used- very safe, unless you are allergic to  Diprivan ( propofol ) or Versed (midazolam).  All short acting and very safe.

does it take a while to get over the effects of twilight anesthesia for a colonoscopy?

Mac anesthesia : Without any other health issues related to the metabolism of the medications, you should generally feel back to normal within a few hours depending on the agents that are used and certainly after 24 hours.

should i be worried about general anesthesia or not waking up for after a colonoscopy and endoscopy?

Worry doesn't help: Yet i understand that we all can do it.  Your doc is well trained in the procedures you mention.  The fear you are coping w/is loss of control.  Easier said than done, but surrendering to the process will be extremely helpful.  Docs have had the same procedures.  Peace and good health.

i take subutex regularly - what are my options for anesthesia during my planned upcoming colonoscopy?

Ask your doctor: Usually doctors will use versed, fentanyl or Propofol for sedation during a colonoscopy.   Your doctor will customize your sedation based on your medical health.

i take one 8mg suboxone strip daily. will this interfere with my colonoscopy scheduled in four days. will the  anesthesia  be effective?

Most likely: you need to let the GI team know and decide with your Suboxone provider when to stop it. I'm not an expert in what they use for sedation, my guess is that they will give midazolam and Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) for the procedure. prob stop bup 36h before procedure but please get your docs on board so they can anticipate any problems.

on average how long does a colonoscopy and endoscopy done at the same time take? will the sedation cause funny behavior after like anesthesia does?

Short sedation: EGD(upper endoscopy) can be as short as 5 minutes, with biposies most of them accopmlished in ~15 min. Colonoscopy takes longer, most fit in the timeframe of 20-40 minutes. The sedation used for the procedure is quite deep usually and approaches/equals Total Intravenous Anesthesia, TIVA. Due to nature of the drug(s) used the recovery may vary but usually is pretty  fast and free of side effects.

can u have a colonoscopy done with something other than general anesthesia?  such as conscious sedation?

Yes. : I never use general anesthesia for a colonoscopy. A good conscious sedation will give you a state of amnesia and you won't remember anything about the procedure. A rn trained in sedation or an anesthesia health care provider can take care of you. Safe procedure in usa.

Very safe: in the hands of a competent anesthesia provider. These procedures are performed thousands of times every single day.  Be well and good luck.

yesterday i had colonoscopy with anesthesia  (passed out for the whole procedure) and today my lungs hurt. why, what's the connection?

R/O COMPLICATION: Often times Propofol is used for anesthesia it is very potent. Rarely when you are recovery from anesthesia, fluid may get into the lungs. This is referred as aspiration. I recommend following up with your GI doctor. If symptoms worsen acutely or fever develops, get immediate evaluation and X-ray to rule out aspiration Pneumonia.

i'm having a steroid shot and they give me anesthesia and then in 2 weeks having a colonoscopy where i'll have anesthesia. is that safe?

Yes: It may not even be the same type of anesthesia. Often local numbing with an injection is all that is needed when local steroids are administered. With a colonoscopy, usually drugs are administered through a IV line resulting in what is called conscious sedation. A 2 week gap is reassuring.Even when surgeries have to be performed "back to back" in emergency situations, all can be done safely:)
