No: You may risk spreading the infection if you pop the abscess.  Let the Amoxicillin work for a couple of days first.  If it is still present and painful then your healthcare provider can perform an incision and drainage for you.

Abscess: A full course of antibiotics is the first step in controlling a severe dental infection, an abscess.  Root Canal/Crown or Extraction/Implant/Crown are the usual follow-up treatment scenarios.  If you have questions about your specific treatment please call your treating Dentist for clarification.

Maybe: Adequate duration of therapy has not been clearly determined for most infections, and we often make guesstimates.  I would imagine that if the abscess was drained, no underlying tissues like bone were involved, that this regimen would be adequate.

May not work: Amoxicillin may not work.  You might need anti-anaerobic coverage with Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) or clindamycin.  Antibiotics will sometimes relieve and stabilize the infection after 3-5 days of treatment but dental abscesses usually require drilling to release the abscess and then root canal or dental extraction.

DO NOT!: Please do not self prescribe antibiotics! If under the care of a licensed dentist, he/she will know the right antibiotic, dosage and frequency for you. If you try to do it yourself, not only will it not resolve the abscess (which also requires elimination of the cause of infection) but it will come back with a vengeance and worse. Please go to and get treated by a competent dentist.

What to do: Please do not rely on dentists or physicians to answer your question, sight unseen. If you are being seen by a dentist, he/she will know the best antibiotic, dosage and  frequency for you. If you try to do it on your own, it will not only be ineffective since the cause of the infection must be treated for success, but the infection will return with a vengeance even if it seems to subside.

Maybe: Abscesses usually need to be drained before they will respond in a predictable fashion to antibiotics.  Sometimes Amoxicillin will help the abscess to drain spontaneously, but if not your dentist is the person to see.

Can't generalize: While antibiotic courses are often longer when used solely to treat infections, in this case a big part of treating your infection was the removal of the offending tooth. Sometimes shorter courses of meds are used to help get the healing started then we rely on your immune system and the healing process. Ask your doctor this question to understand why a short course was prescribed.

i am on amoxicillin for my wisdom teeth and my mom is on cipro (ciprofloxacin) for a kidney infection. i accidentally took both together, will i be ok?

Amoxicillin + cipro (ciprofloxacin): Unless you have an allergy, taking a single cipro (ciprofloxacin) tablet  while on amoxicillin most likely will not have any untoward effect. Consider keeping your medication in a separate location and read the label before ingestion.
