i've been taking 3 weeks 25 mg elavil for nerve pain & it helps wonderfully. however, my mind isn't like it use to be. i feel blah.. i wasn't depressed before taking it, but since taking it, my mind isn't at peace like before. can elavil cause this?

See below: All medications have side effects. When treating depression with antidepressants, one most always be on the watch for worsening depression. However, it is not  clear whether the medication causes the depression or not. Also, Elavil (amitriptyline) is an old treatment for depression, that really is not used any more. There are better medications.

Just take one.: Both can cause mouth dryness/constipation &amp; both are sedating anti-depressants. Would prefer mirtazapine although you did not really provide details of what type of depression you have. If you really need to continue amitriptyline, would suggest SSRI like sertraline instead of mirtazapine in AM to counteract the constipation side effect of amitriptyline.
