See below: All medications have side effects. When treating depression with antidepressants, one most always be on the watch for worsening depression. However, it is not clear whether the medication causes the depression or not. Also, Elavil (amitriptyline) is an old treatment for depression, that really is not used any more. There are better medications.

As a tricyclic, therapeutic doses leads to problematic sidd effects (e.g., sedation, weight gain, dry mouth, etc.). However, Elavil (amitriptyline) at loeer doses is commonly used in pain management and as a non-addictive sleep aid.
