could someone please tell me about aids dementia?

Clarification needed: Aids is someone who have advanced diseases of HIV positive individuals with worsening of symptoms, including dementia. Any change of personality, memory loss or/and loss of functional activity such as bathing, dressing result hiv-related dementia. The new onset of dementia varies by age and the severity of HIV related symptoms. To my knowledge there is no term for aids dementia.

Possiblly- or not: Hiv dementia is less prevelent now with current HIV medications but is still noted.
Treatment(meds), mood, and a complete work-up is needed. 
This should include  neuro-psychological testing- which is even more helpful if obtained at diagnosis for comparison but not often done these days.
Neurological evaluation along with infectious disease re-evaluation.

: Are you referring to preventing dementia decades in the future or right now? I’m general maintaining good metabolic health (blood sugar, cholesterol, pressure), exercising, and eating a healthful Mediterranean diet is a good first step.

Good Evaluation: Make sure that any "reversible causes" of cognitive problems have been ruled out.  Contact the local chapter of the alzheimer's association they will be an excellent guide to resources for family & the patient.  Other than that, exercise, the mediterranean diet (rich in anti-oxidants), & trying new activities.  The cholinesterase inhibitors are key to medication management.

No: Dementia is usually differentiated into two types: vascular type, and non-vascular type.  Vascular dementia is due to disruption in the vascular supply causing degeneration of neurons.  Non-vascular dementia, such as Alzheimer's dementia, Lewy body dementia are cause by mechanisms involve amyloid plaque depositions and neurofibrillary tangles, and accumulation of Lewy body in the neuron.

There are many.: Alzheimer's dementia is the most common type of irreversible dementia.  Others include multi-infarct or vascular dementia, lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementias, huntington's disease, creutzfeld-jakob disease. Approximately 1 percent of dementia cases are reversible. They include operable brain tumors, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disease, alcoholism or depression.
