Kidney failure can be a result of damage to the kidneys from poorly controlled or undiagnosed diabetes. She likely has a viral illness which exacerbated her diabetes and ultimately put her in kidney failure.

Chronic liver failure occurs over years' time from hepatitis c, alcohol, fatty liver, others. You present with yellowing of skin, lack of energy, decreased mental status, leg swelling, abdominal fluid.
