Acute/chronic differ: There acute (fast) and chronic (slow) liver failure. Acute liver failure can occur with an overdose or a virus - you present with decreased energy, nausea, vomiting, pain, decreased mental status. Chronic liver failure occurs over years' time from hepatitis c, alcohol, fatty liver, others. You present with yellowing of skin, lack of energy, decreased mental status, leg swelling, abdominal fluid.
