Depends: There are 2 main categories of liver failure-- compensated or uncompensated. Compensated means that the liver while profoundly injured, can still perform basic functions. How long a person can live with liver failure depends on the reversibility of the injury and the severity of the injury. This can range from days to several months. Liver transplantation can be curative, in some cases.
