Similar to Vinegar: Really! the acidity (ph) of the vagina is near that of vinegar.  The "good" bacteria, lactobacilli sp., create this and it prevents infections.  Disturb them and things get unbalanced where yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis (bv) are more likely.  Likewise if you feel inclined to douche, then a vinegar and water one is best for this reason.

Yes: The vaginal pH is sensitive to non physiologic substances introduced into it.  A water soluble gel like K-Y or Astroglide is better.
