Therapy: Try therapy first.  If not painful, then don't worry about it.  If painful, proceed with therapy for eccentric contraction exercises and deep tissue massage.  Ultrasound and electrical stimulation can also help.  Anti-inflammatory medicine can help with inflammation pain.  Surgery is the last resort if symptoms persist.

If its a : Retro-calcaneal spur it can really irritate the achilles and sometimes rupture it.  If causing pain surgey maybe the best choice if you are an active person. Can try rest, ice but that won't get rid of deposits already there.

Tendonitis: Chronic Achilles tendonitis can do this. The tendon may also be partially torn. An orthopedic surgeon would be best to evaluate,advise and treat you.Wearing an appliance and/or physical therapy may be ordered.  An mri may be recommended for accurate diagnosis.

Tough problem : This is a difficult problem to treat. Conservatively you can try heel lift, anti- inflammatories , ice and physical therapy.  Immobilizaion for a period of time in a boot could also be tried. If all that fails you can consider a surgical option.

Maybe a cyst?: Sebaceous cysts are over mistaken for a calcium deposit. Thee are benign and not a problem. However, if you speak with your physician it can usually be removed even in the office. Please make sure that you talk this over with your physician to make sure it is a cyst and nothing more.

Sounds like: They may have been implying you have a heel spur. Is this what they said? Try wearing arch supports, apply ice to the region, a night splint when going to bed....Stretch your achilles' tendon. If all else fails see a podiatrist.

Achilles Tendon: There are a lot of options prior to surgery for achilles tendon calcification pathology.  Physical therapy, wearing supportive open backed shoes, antiinflammatory medications, rest.  Although you may be at risk for heel cord rupture, it's not definitive.

Get examined: Pain in the ankle and back of the heel towards the back of the leg is where achilles tendonitis occurs, but are you sure that's what you are dealing with?  Get examined properly.  Xrays can infer position of soft tissue but mainly highlight bone.  To examine the achilles, an MRI would be warranted to check for damage - even a longitudinal tear which can be very subtle but result in lingering pain.
