does regularly holding it in when one has to pee increase or decrease the ability to do so? do the muscles get stronger and lead to being able to wait longer or weaker and lead to incontinence? seems i've heard both, looking for a definitive answer?

: Holding in urine does not make the bladder muscle stronger or weaker. But it is a good idea to answer nature when it calls or soon after. Pl ignore opinions regarding medical matters by lay people as they are almost always wrong.

: Most cases of incontinence are a result of intraoperative damage to the native urinary sphincteric mechanisms, particularly the intrinsic sphincter component. Bladder denervation during prostatectomy is also a frequent cause of incontinence after the operation, resulting in impaired detrusor contractility and poor bladder compliance. Stress urinary incontinence is present in 95% of cases.

3-8 weeks to up to 1 year and 6-8% of men have chronic incontinence F/U with urology.

No, but: Sciatica is pain in the distribution of the sciatic nerve which is the back of the buttock and the thigh. It does not include incontinence by this definition. But, causes of sciatica include causes that interfere with the function of lower spinal cord nerves and some of these causes of sciatica could conceivably cause incontinence.

Multiple causes: Bladder infection (uti), constipation. Sometimes hereditary overactive bladder. Extreme physical stress in some athletes esp if high impact sports such as track, gymnastics & basketball. Pelvic muscle dysfunction, can be weak or dysfunctional hypertonic (spastic) muscles leading to loss of bladder control.

Meds: Nerve damage, poor stooling habits, obstruction.

Not generally: Having a Foley catheter to drain the urine from the bladder usually prevents incontinence.  Occasionally, the bladder has spasms because of the catheter and urine can leak around the catheter; medications can help prevent this.  Also, sometimes if a Foley has been in a while and is then removed. Incontinence can occur because the bladder is not used to holding so much urine.

No: Just having babies vaginally or more than 2 by c-section regardless of size is a primary source for stress incontinence.  Urge incontinence is more dietary and training of th bladder.
