Depends: Aaas can be fixed using either an open or endovascular technique. The open approach will take weeks to recover from while the endovascular approach may only take days to a week. The complexity of the repair and length of hospital stay will influence the recovery as well.

If the AAA repair was done open or in an emergent setting, patients are often anemic. In addition there are a lot of "fluid shifts" which cause significant edema post-operatively. Other common side affects are a sore throat&cough.

Preparation: Like anything else, the better shape you are in going into surgery, the better your results coming out. If you are smoking, stop before surgery. Exercise (walking) helps. A lot depends on the type of repair you are having, either endovascular or open. Endovascular is less invasive, but the durability is unknown.

Any elective proced-: ure has it's risks and benefits, which is discussed by the surgeon before the actual procedure is done. With AAA, even sepsis or infection is discussed as a complication, which is why you must sign your life away when consenting. You were warned pros/cons. If infection is listed, and can happen anytime the body is open, and antibiotics are given, then it's not neither negligence or medical error.

Yes, it can: It is not possible to maintain absolute sterility. Even it were possible, we all develop transient bacteremia from brushing teeth, having bowel movement and the like, and these bacteria in blood can seed a surgical site and cause sepsis.

Yes: Probably you are thinking of endoleak following stent graft repair for aaa. What this means is that there is persistent blood flow into the excluded aneurysm sac after the stent graft is placed. It is not leaking outside the aaa, just outside the stent graft. There are several types, some require treatment and others do not. Your surgeon will be able to explain your specific case.

Yes: An endovascular repair of  his AAA will be much less traumatic to his body than an open repair. Nothing we do in medicine is without risk. Assuming he has a large aaa, the risk of endovascular repair will be less then the risk of watching and waiting (doing nothing).

Recovery is variable: Hopefully your family member had endovascular or stent of aaa. Your surgeon will release you from hospital when you meet criteria. Recovery is variable. Need to monitor for problems while staying on medical regimen. Fever, drainage from incisions, emesis, excessive coughing and pain should be discussed with your care team. Expect fatique. Help maintain medication schedule. Make post operative appt.

Depends: If you have a straight forward aneurysm that can be done using endovascular techniques, then you typically go home the next day. If you you have to have an open AAA  repair you will be in the hospital anywhere from 4 days to around a week depending on how the post-operative course goes.
