Some confusion: I think something got lost in translation somewhere: the yolk sac is contained inside the gestational sac, so it's not possible for the thing inside to be bigger than the thing outside. The doctor may mean "bigger than expected" or "smaller than expected."  I hope this helps.

i am 6 weeks pregnant and an ultrasound showed a gestational sac and yolk sac, but no embryo, does this mean i could still have an ectopic pregnancy?

Very unlikely: I presume the gestational sac and yolk sac are located in the uterus, in this case, the chance of a concomitant tubal pregnancy is extremely small, almost negligible. Hopefully, you do not have any bleeding or cramping, in which case, the ultrasound may be repeated in 7-10 days to determine viability (presence of a fetal pole with heart beat). Best Wishes

Recheck : Most likely your doctor will advise you to repeat the sonogram in 1 week to check on the growth and development. Generally a fetal pole  can be seen between week 6-7. If a sonogram is showing less than expected then a follow up is done.

Early ultrasound: My guess is that you are going to have a follow up scan as there is no mention of a fetal pole or measurement for dating purposes.? Seeing a heart flicker is a positive sign that should be reassuring. I would simply ask for a follow up exam.

Discuss with doctor : It would not be appropriate for us to make a definitive statement without all the information. I will say that a fetus should be visible in a gestational sac 7-8 weeks size. Ask your doctor if you have a blighted ovum. A blighted ovum is where the baby never forms. This can be treated with medication of a surgery called a D and C

Gestational dates: At 6-7 weeks usually a heartbeat can be seen. Often people are wrong about the date they got pregnant. The sonogram show they got pregnant at a different time than they expected. Your sonogram should be repeated in about a week to see if a heartbeat can be seen.

got my scan today based on my lmp supposed to be 8weeks pregnant. scan shows gestational sac,yolk sac and fetal pole 2mm age 5weeks 3days. but no heartbeat detected. i had a scan 10days ago shows nothing only thick lining,is there something wrong?

Next scan can tell: Your next pelvic sonograms (often called"pregnancy dating and viability scans") performed in the next few days by a skilled certified songrapher should provide you and your doctor enough information to answer your concerns about the gestational age of your pregnancy and about its viability.  Your obstetrical team may suggest some additional scan and testing later on to offer you more reassurances.

Maybe: By 8 weeks 2 days you expect to see a heart beat on ultrasound. It is possible that you are not as far along as you think or that this is a blighted ovum/missed miscarriage. To be sure you can check quantitaive HCG's and look for the appropriate doubling or do a repeat ultrasound in 1 week. Remember that this sort of thing is not because of something you did or didn't do. Hope this helps.

It may be normal.: The delay in reaching the normal milestones we expect to see on ultrasound in early pregnancy are simply the result of a delayed ovulation, so that you are earlier than your dates suggest. On other occasions, it may be that the pregnancy is not doing well. Only time can really tell, because bleeding in pregnancy has little predictive value. On occasion, a blood test can be helpful. Time will tell.

Blighted ovum?: The absence of a fetal pole in a 5+ week gestation is not good. Check your hCG and Progesterone levels, and repeat both in 48 hrs to monitor the pregnancy.
