Watch him closely: Overall, no worries :) Your little guy picked up a virus, RSV or rhinovirus for example and likely not influenza. There are no medications that need to be prescribed. Things you could do is get nasal saline drops to break up the mucous and run the humidifier daily through fall and winter. Be careful if you use the bulb suction as this could cause irritation in the nasal passages if overused.

my baby is 4 months old he has a bad cough and stuffy nose  i went to the dr today and he prescribed dimetapp for him 0.7 ml twice a day is that ok?

Cold Treatment: Yes, that's what i used for my own son at that age. As far as the dose goes...I'd have to know the weight of your child.

No. Nasal congestion: &amp; cough are symptoms of a viral upper respiratory illness. Teething does not cause fever, diarrhea or any other symptoms not related to the gums , although some  babies have pain &amp; irritability. Drooling at 4 months does not necessarily mean a baby is teething, just that the salivary glands are beginning to function. The central lower incisors usually erupt first, around 6 months.

Humidity: Use Normal Saline nose drops and then either wipe them off or use a bulb suction held outside the nostril to suck out the mucus. Do not put the bulb suction inside the nostril as it can damage the nasal mucus membrane and increase the stuffiness of nose.

Baby cold: The recommended interventions for a baby cold -- stuffy nose --is either sucking out the excess mucous, if there is a lot of it, with a plastic bulb syringe, which you can get at the drug store, and/or applying 2-3 drops of a nasal saline solution (available otc) which will shrink and dry up the nasal membranes. Otc cold & cold medicines are not recommended at this age--too many side effects.

Humidity: A humidifier will help, as will using saline drops right in the nose to loosen the mucous. If someone is taking a shower, someone else sitting in bathroom in the steam from the shower is also helpful. Put the humidifier right next to the baby's crib. Putting it across the room doesn't do much good.

There is no: actual medication for congestion recommended for a baby of your daughter's age. The saline drops and suctioning with a bulb syringe are the best remedies. Also, you can use a humidifier/vaporizer in her room, which should also help. Make sure she is drinking plenty of fluids. If she develops a fever, cough, decreased oral intake or isn't getting better, you should take her to her pediatrician.

are inhalant allergies common in  a newborn ? i care for a 1 month old , a stuffy nose  for two days. a temperature of 99.6  started today.

Allergies in newborn: Inhalant allergies are not that common at this age but if the baby is constantly being exposed to some allergens e.g. Dusty room, old carpets that have not been cleaned for a while, it is possible.  But given that the baby's temp is little elevated (not fever), it may be a cold. You could use nasal saline spray or drops and to see if helps see your pediatrician.

Use normal saline: Nasal congestion alone can be managed with nasal saline drops. Use 2-5 drops in each side of nose as often as necessary. Monitor for signs if worsening such as poor feeding, fast or heavy breathing, and fever as this might indicate need for further evaluation by your pediatrician.

hi, my almost 3 month old has a stuffy nose and a bit of a cough. i took him to a gp because our pediatrician is on leave, he prescribed sinupret syrup and prospan syrup, is that safe for his age? what else can i do to open up his nose?

Saline wash : I consider neither med appropriate for infants that age. Small infants have small nasal passages that block easily with inhaled irritants/dust/fumes. They are best cleared with saline nose wash while those meds tend to thicken mucus &amp; make things worse.Eliminate any smells/dust/irritants &amp; this will happen less.
