Baby cold: The recommended interventions for a baby cold -- stuffy nose --is either sucking out the excess mucous, if there is a lot of it, with a plastic bulb syringe, which you can get at the drug store, and/or applying 2-3 drops of a nasal saline solution (available otc) which will shrink and dry up the nasal membranes. Otc cold & cold medicines are not recommended at this age--too many side effects.

Common cold: If your infant is not febrile and otherwise appears well medical treatment is not needed. Suction out the nose with a bulb syringe if it appears to be blocked, consider the use of a humidifier in the child's bedroom at night to keep the air moist, and make sure the child is taking plenty of fluids. If your infant has a fever, is not feeding well, or is otherwise ill appearing, see a doctor.

?irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion &cough & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.
