It could be many: Narcotic painkillers such as morphine or oxycodone would be most likely to do this, but any painkiller might do this to some extent. One could not select a painkiller where this would not be a concern. You make a good point ... using pain killers, in general, masks the body's important response to injury.

Cramp vs. twitch: A number of abnormal sensations can arise from muscles including cramping (usually painful), twitching (feels like vibration), and focal rippling like movements. 

When this occurs all over the body, it may also be what is called myoclonus, or brief, rapid jerking movements.   These can occur at the onset of sleep.

One's primary care doctor can evaluate to see what a person means by things like "a bolt of energy." Major muscle loss is, of course, not a normal thing. Physiatrist may help.

Weight loss: You should start by going on line to see "Body Mass Index" (BMI).
It will help you record your height and weight and let you know if your BMI is OK, too high, or too low.

Once you have that data you can begin to make adjustments:

Normal data: Relax and enjoy your workouts
Too low: Increase your food intake
Too high: Workout but also decrease your food intake.

Either one.: The pain could be due to muscle spasm, OR nerve pain.  Sounds like it deserves more investigation by your doctor.   In the meantime, make sure you are drinking plenty of water and electrolyte drinks to eliminate dehydration as a cause.

Massage it: To help get rid of the acute pain. Make sure you are well hydrated. Maybe eat a banana and or take magnesium supplements as they may be brought about by vitamin deficiency. If you are on cholesterol lowering medications these can be a cause as well and you should inform your doctor.

Exercise & Diet: The answer is simple, but reaching the goal is not necessarily easy.  Exercise--at least 20 minutes of moderate cardiovascular activity every other day--and a balanced diet based on your weight and gender are critical.  No lasting solutions have been discovered/invented.  That is, unfortunately, there's no "get rich quick" or magic exercise.  Simply work hard and be safe and persistent.
