A carotid bruit is a sound heard by a stethoscope that is produced from abnormal blood flow in a blood vessel called the carotid artery. The sound usually suggests there is narrowing of the artery and may indicate a condition such as atherosclerosis, in which fatty material collects on the blood vessel walls.
