Turbulent flow: Think of blood flow like a river. Now dump a bunch of rocks in one spot. This makes for choppy rapids. The bruit is just the sound of the choppy, turbulent blood flow. The concern is that the turbulence may be due to narrowing by plaque, which can lead to stroke. Ultrasound will be able to diagnose.
