Not necessarily: Genital human papillomavirus (hpv) is the most common std and associated with genital warts, cervical, penile, anal and some throat cancers. There are more than 40 types of hpv that can cause infection. Testing for hpv identifies exposure and antibodies and in most patients, hpv is latent and viral shedding is controlled by the immune system. Vaccination is recommended and can be protective.
