A member asked:

I am going to the doctor for a checkup to get shots and they usually make me pee in a cup and prick my finger. what are these tests for?

Tests: Although urine and blood can be sent for various tests, the most common testing would be a urinalysis, checking for blood, protein, glucose, urine ph, signs of infection, and specific gravity of the urine. The finger prick would likely be to check the blood sugar.

Ask your doctor: Urinalysis checks for urinary tract infection, diabetes, proteinuria or pus cells (Kidney disease) blood to rule out cancer. Finger prick can check your blood count or hematocrit i.e. ? anemia, blood sugar. Most blood tests require more blood than can be obtained by finger prick. Never feel shy about questioning your Dr.
