A member asked:

Took cotrimoxazole w/o prescrption tonight an hour after my bc pill due to painful uti. is that ok? will my pill become less effective?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No interactions: Cotrimoxazole does not decrease the effectiveness of birth control. Having said so, its important that you get properly diagnosed/ treated by your doctor. Misdiagnosed/incomplete treatment of UTI can result in other complications(infertility/other pelvic problems). Recommended dose of cotrimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole 800 mg + trimethoprim 160 mg) every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days for uti. Take care.
