False positive results with some types of syphilis tests are quite common. For the "non-treponemal" tests (like VDRL and RPR), it happens with 1-2% of all tests done, which means thousands of time per year in the UK. It can also happen with the newer EIA tests. You can be sure you do not have syphilis (and not HIV either, if that wasn't a typo). If you're still concerned, discuss w/ your doctor.
