Treponemal tests including TP-EIA and TP-PA are not 100% specific for syphilis; positive reactions occur variably in patients with other spirochetal diseases, such as leptospirosis, Lyme disease, yaws, etc. Nontreponemal tests are helpful in differentiating those other spirochetal diseases from syphilis.
