A member asked:

Can a pap miss adenocarcinoma? concerned because of bv discharge, pelvic and back pain. pap normal, 4 years in a row but hpv positive only this year?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pap smears have been the standard screening for cervical cancer, a form of squamous cell cancer particular to that organ. Adenocarcinoma as would originate within the inner lining of the uterus is found on an endometrial biopsy taken from inside the uterus. Different tools for different issues. Please discuss any concerns you have with your treating OBGYN.
