A prescription is a direction by a doctor, to a pharmacist, to dispense a certain medication to a patient. A doctor can always dispense medications themselves and note it in the patient's chart. It's not uncommon.

Some times physicians have medicine samples given by Pharmaceutical companies and they give them to their pts as starters. Rx is needed to have it filled at the pharmacy
