Antibiotics have been known to interfere with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. It would be wise to use a backup method such as condoms, spermicide or diaphragm to prevent pregnancy during the treatment period.

The possibility of antibiotics making birth control pills ineffective isn't quite an urban myth, but it's close. It is a very rare problem and then only with high doses of a few antibiotics. Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) for sure is not a problem. It achieves effective levels in urine but not blood (which is why its only use is for UTI treatment) and therefore cannot interfere with BCPs. No worries!
