The rectum and anus are amazing structures as they allow the passage of flatus without passing feces. However, with age that ability wanes as the anal sphincter loses tone. Fecal leakage or fecal incontinence then can be a problem. When such symptoms become problematic I refer them to a proctologist or colorectal surgeon for evaluation and treatment options.

What you described could be called fecal incontinence. You should consult a gastroenterologist for evaluation of the neuronal status of the anal sphincter. Visit this site for info: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fecal-incontinence/symptoms-causes/syc-20351397
