My girlfriend and i are in a monogamous relationship, and have both been tested negative for stds. we want to try unprotected anal sex. what precautions should we take to avoid risks of uti from e. coli or other infections?

The only way to completely avoid the risks associated with anal sex is to not have it. However if you insist on having anal sex a condom should be used to protect against the spread of infections & possible pregnancy from semen deposited near the vagina. A tear in the skin can also occur. Therefore lubrication & very good hygiene should be used. I wish you & your girlfriend well!

Agree with Dr. Mandel. Anus and rectum are not made for penile penetration and your gf risks damage to the anal sphincter even with use of condom and lubricant. Oral sex may be safer than anal.
