The far end of the digestive tract is simply a storage area with a secondary function of withdrawing moisture from feces. Hard stools are the result of both diet and duration of feces in the large intestine. Teaching yourself to empty on your own schedule more often can help keep stools softer & avoid hard/bulky stools when diet is not enough.
