HSV culture: HSV infection results most commonly in open sores. These sores can be swabbed for a culture to determine if they are HSV. In between eruptions, the virus lies dormant in nerve cells and is not detectable by swab culture. A Doctor can prescribe an antiviral to treat outbreaks once a person has been diagnosed with HSV.
