Yes: These days, oral cold sores may be Herpes Simplex Type 1 (70%) or Type 2 (30%). Genital Herpes is 70% Type 2 and 30% Type 1. This is because of oral sex being commonly practiced. You may conceivably be infected with a mouth lesion, however, usually it is skin-to-skin contact. It would be a stretch to get clitoral herpes from saliva.

Problems with HSV-1: The cold sore virus, HSV-1, is similar to the genital herpes virus HSV-2. Unfortunately, if someone has an HSV-1 lesion that's active (red and crusty like a 'volcano') then it could be infectious to others who are non-immune. The HSV-1 virus prefers to go to the mouth area, but there are cases when it can spread to the genitals or other sites if the exposure is significant. Call doc for antiviral.
