Multiple Causes: Urethritis can have multiple causes that might not have to do with sex. Of course someone who complains of urethritis should be assessed for whether or not he/she has an STD such as gonorrhea/chlamydia, but they might not always be the cause. Sometimes GI bugs like E.coli can cause a urethritis. Risky sexual practices can increase your risk. Condoms are good protection always.

Yes, almost always: With very rare exceptions, urethritis is an STD. (But not if you are not sexualy active; in that case, urethritis of course cannot be an STD.) The 3 main causes of urethritis are gonorrhea, chlamydia, and nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). If you think you have urethritis, or have symptoms (discharge of pus or mucus, sometimes with painful urination) see a doctor ASAP for diagnosis and treatment.
