Cool for a 3 y/o: The mist from both is the same, but the dangers of hot water from a warm mist humidiifer is very real with a 3 year old. I have seen too many burns from warm/hot humidifiers where curious toddlers touch them or get too close and get burned. Also, you have to be very conscientious about cleaning warm ones daily as they are more prone to harbor molds and other germs in the warm mist. Go with cool!
