Many possible causes: The testicles can atrophy for any number of reasons. Hormonal causes include underproduction or impaired response to androgenic hormones & antiandrogenic medications. Vascular problems such as testicular torsion or varicocele can lead to atrophy. Severe infections of the testis, such as mumps virus or bacterial infections such as epididymo-orchitis can lead to atrophic scarring.
