A type of progestin: Levonorgestrel is one type of progestin (an artifical progesterone-like hormone). It can be given in low doses or in higher doses - the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud is a low dose, 20 micrograms a day, compared with birth control pills which are a medium dose - 100 to 150 micrograms a day. Some common 'morning after' pills are high-dose Levonorgestrel - two 750 microgram doses or a single 1500 microgram dose.
