It is the front door: The hymen, if present forms the entrance to the vagina. It can form in a way that totally covers the entrance with no opening for menstrual blood to exit. This produces problems in puberty. It can also disappear in a fetus or be lost in early childhood .You should expect to find it about a half inch deep inside if the labia minora.

Likely it isn't: The hymen is often broken well before intercourse these days just because girls are so active and tampons can also contribute. An exam would tell you but it says nothing about whether or not you are a virgin.

Have an exam: but placing a tampon should not hurt even with an intact hymen. You should be fine
