Yes and other causes: As any gas in the soft tissues is abnormal, this should represent infection unless there is another explanation (very unusual). Causes in this area would include: diverticulitis, appendicitis, rectal perforation from trauma, inflammation or cancer, urologic infections, or generalized soft tissue infections of the perineum (Fournier's gangrene) in susceptible individuals.
