Minimal: The baseline rick for a deep vein thrombus (DVT) is about 5 in 10, 000. Birth control pills increase that risk by a factor of 2 or 3 - making the overall risk between 10 and 15 in 10, 000. An individual's risk for a DVT is increased with, among other factors - obesity, cancer, trauma, smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, inherited clotting disorders, prolonged inactivity, surgery, and age.
