A member asked:

Why do some doctors check for iron levels and others only check hemoglobin?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Screening tests: Since you must have adequate iron stores to make hemoglobin, the test for hemoglobin covers two issues with a single screening. If the hemoglobin is low, it is most commonly do to low iron, but can also be due to a variety of other issues.Either way, most practitioners look as the two tests as having equal value and order whatever is their normal routine. If either value is low, other tests are done.
