A member asked:

Can being on ritalin (methylphenidate) for almost 20 years lead to alzheimer's or dementia?

No evidence so far: The approved stimulants, when taken as directed, do not increase the risk for alzheimer's. www.alzheers.gov is a good resource for caregivers of those afflicted with alzheimer's. Stay healthy and take care.

There is some debate: There is a great deal of information that stimulants of all types are safe and there is also some information that all psychotropics are 'neurotoxic' and cause brain related issues. It depends on who you read. Peter breggin is staunchly anti-meds and believes they cause dementia. Other long-term studies counter this position. Having brain scans may help in 'seeing changes' in the brain.
