Terminology: Ego states, personalities, and alters are sometimes used interchangeably. Some question whether the "alters" in did are truly separate personalities/entities existing within an individual, or whether they are simply different states ("ego states") that shift depending on outer circumstance & internal need. The change from multiple personality to dissociative identity d/o shows these questions.
