I take 10 meqs of kcl and my potassium is 3.5. my doctor doesn't seem to care why it was low in the first place, 2.8. isn't it important to find the cause?

Repeat test: It is important to repeat the testing. If the levels continue to decrease, then a potassium supplement should be taken. Every 10 meq of kcl may increase potassium by 0.1. Potassium rich diet, including prunes, oranges, peaches, banana, is recommended. Pt with cardiovascular disease should have a recommended level of 4-5 potassium.

Yes: There are many cause of low potassium. Diuretics, certain drugs, diarrhea, kidney diseases and others.
