Not normal: Truly black diarrhea is never normal. Black, tarry, smelly stools can be caused by gastrointestinal bleeding. Other things that can make stool look black include iron supplements and pepto bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) which some people take for diarrhea. If you think you might be bleeding, you should go to an emergency room.
