Several reasons: The amount of stress during the day, the position your head may be in when sleeping, the amount of usage that tooth has had during the day all add up. You must see your dentist asap to definitively treat this tooth to eliminate the cause of the pain -- either root canal treatment or tooth extraction.

Very common: because of the increased blood pressure to your head when lying down. See your dentist for evaluation and treatment.
